Vista, San Diego County
Water arrived in Vista in the 1920s, piped from Lake Henshaw by the newly formed Vista Irrigation District, and avocado groves soon covered the hills. By the 1940s the town was calling itself the avocado capital of the world. Homes and business parks have replaced most of the groves, though avocado trees still shade many backyards.
